In the past two weeks I have been lucky to hear the narratives and experiences of my fellow classmates, Jayden Wagner- Mason and Alyssa Farrow in the PWR2 class we were both in. The PWR class was about the rhetoric of resilience and survival storied.
Jayden spoke about the resilience within the Hawaiian community and how she saw this manifested back home in the famous Merrie Monarch Hoike Festival held on her island every year. In her presentation, she highlighted the significance of retaining authentic Hawaiian dance, art and clothing and how the festival acts as a showcase for these things. (We actually watched a couple of videos from the festival in class if y'all remember!) This was particularly relevant as she pointed to Western culture appropriating the and misportraying the spirit of many beautiful and sacred traditions such as hula. Also she mentioned that every airline is booked the week of the event and all the rental cars are being used for people traveling from around Hawaii and the world. . . woah.
Alyssa spoke about resilience in the Native community at Stanford. Her presentation centered around student life for Native students at Stanford and how the NACC and Muwekma are valuable resources to cultivate resilience for Native Stanford students. It was awesome getting to know both of them and I was stoked to find out that they will both be staffing Muwekma next year (!!!)
