Community Post 2: Heart-Warming Dinner at Muwekma:)
For this post, I am writing about one of the dinners I had with a fellow Casa Zapata resident. I got know Alex as a freshman living in Casa Zapata last year. He is actually taking the seminar this quarter so you may have seen him around! I invited him over to dinner because he had not yet tried any of the delicious food here at Muwekma. Besides enjoying a nice meal, we talked about how important it is to have an identity. Someone may call themselves "Latino," though it may sound differently to different people because the term encompasses an ethnicity and not a race. It can, therefore, be hard for someone to claim an identity if they think they have to meet certain expectations (namely physical characteristics, language, etc.). Given the intense history that has occurred in this area of the world, America has produced people of different races. Alex and I strongly identify as Latinos but we can certainly understand why others would hesitate to do so if they feel they don't belong. The discussion was very interesting and we concluded that the term is simply too broad. If you have an identity, you should own it!
Here is a picture of the dinner we had:
