Up until recently I had been eager to watch Wind River, a movie about solving the murder case of a Native woman. It turns out that the woman the movie centers on is not actually Native at all, but Chinese. The actress even changed her last name to her middle name leading up to her role in Wind River.
“For all of her work up through 2017 she has used the name Kelsey Chow. For Wind River and Yellowstone, where she played Native American women, she used the name Kelsey Asbille” (Thanks, Wikipedia).
Pretty suspicious in my eyes. Anyway, what kind of message does this send to Native women? Accurate and fair representation is seldom allotted to Natives, but is that enough basis to ignore the rest of the movie which may or may not contain many valuable lessons?
