community event 1: alcatraz sunrise ceremony, oct. 9
this year was the first year i went to the sunrise ceremony on alcatraz island, and i’m really grateful that i got to go, and that i got to go with lots of muwekma residents. it was almost surreal to pull up to this fortress of a former prison, with “INDIANS WELCOME” painted in red on the front, and bear witness to both the history and the present presence of indigenous resilience and resistance.
community event 2: ujamaa theme program, oct. 12
i really appreciated this theme program and the work aliyah and gabi did to break down siloing and uplift the connections between black and native communities in the U.S. i think this work has been and is deeply important for us to do to combat the “divide and conquer” strategy that white supremacy, imperialism and settler colonialism are so good at.
